Jun. 7, 2017 - A small twin-engine airplane burst into flames as it crash-landed on the 405 Freeway in Santa Ana on Friday morning shortly after taking off from John Wayne Airport. Oct. 12, 2016 - A Piper PA-34 Seneca crashed near the headquarters of Pratt & Whitney, which makes military and commercial jet engines. The crash occurred while an American Flight Academy instructor and student were trying to land at Brainard Airport in Hartford. The crash appears to be intentional. May 4, 2013 - Emergency landing on Highway 52 and State Route 125 in Santee. Plane took off from Gillespie Field and encountered a problem in which the pilot opted to make the emergency landing on the freeway. No injuries occurred.

July 22, 2012 - 1968 Piper PA-28R-180 Cherokee single-engine aircraft with four people on board made an emergency landing on southbound I-15 between Escondido, CA and El Norte Parkway. The plane was enroute from Mammoth Yosemite Airport to McClellan-Palomar Airport in Carlsbad, CA when it ran out of fuel. Minor damage was caused when the left wing was clipped by a pickup truck.

July 21, 2012
- Emergency landing on Highway 67 south of Riverford Road. Plane took off from Gillespie Field experiencing engine trouble preventing the gain of altitude. Upon circling back around to land the plane's engine stopped forcing the emergency landing on the freeway.

 
 

June 3, 2012 - An one-of-kind British Fairey Firefly participating in the "Wings Over Gillespie" air show went off the north side of the runway after its landing gear as it was landing. No one was injured.

Jan. 26, 2012
- A Cessna 210 on its way from Carlsbad, CA to the Hemet-Ryan Airport crashed in a field south Hemet-Ryan Airport, just east of Warren Road and Domenigoni Parkway. No injuries occurred.

 
 

Jan. 14, 2012 - Pilot making a full-stop landing did not adequately compensate for changing wind directions crashing off the runway. The plane sustained substantial damage. Occurred in San Diego, CA.

 
 

July 14, 2011 - An experimental single-engine plane made a hard landing and caught fire at Gillespie Field. The plane had noticed the fuel pressure dropped due to a leak and turned back to airport and the cab of the plane began to fill with smoke. When the plane landed at Gillespie, the engine caught fire after the nose of the plane hit the runway. The pilot escaped without injury.

 
 

Apr. 10, 2011 - An experimental aircraft ended its flight abruptly around 11:50 am at the East end of Lake Wohlford Rd in Valley Center, CA. The pilot suffered minor neck and back injuries.

June 2, 2010 - A single-engine Sport Cruiser crashed after experiencing problems with the plane's canopy after takeoff from Gillespie Field. The plane clipped trolley lines and crashed upside down on the roadway at Cuyamaca Street and Prospect Avenue in Santee, CA. Pilot transported to hospital for minor injuries.

Feb. 19, 2010
- A single-engine Cessna experienced loss of power while inbound to Gillespie Field and crashed landed on Johnson Ave. in El Cajon, south of Gillespie, clipped a power pole and caused a power outage. The pilot and passenger were able to crawl out of the wreckage before the plane burst into flames. Minor injuries occurred.

 
 

Oct. 24, 2009 - A 1939 Piper J-4A flipped over upon landing. No injuries occurred to the pilot and passenger.

 
 

Oct 12, 2009 - A Department of Homeland Security MD 600 McDonnell Douglass helicopter made a hard landing, damaging the aircraft. No injuries occurred.

May 9, 2009 - A home-built open-cockpit two-seater plane crashed while doing aerobatics over the East County Highlands. The plane went down after one of its wings came off in midair. Two men from Ramona died in the crash.

Jan. 24, 2009 - A Cessna 172, registered to California Flight Academy of El Cajon, crashed into a utility pole east of Oceanside Municipal Airport seriously injuring both the pilot and passenger. The plane was on its way from Gillespie Field to Torrance Municipal Airport. It was unclear whether the plane was being used for training purposes when the accident occurred.

NTSB Cites 'Intentional Act' in Connecticut Plane Crash

 
  Oct. 11, 2016 - The initial investigation of a small-plane crash in East Hartford, Connecticut, that killed one of two people on board "indicates the crash is the result of an intentional act," the National Transportation Safety Board said today.

The NTSB, which was the lead agency on the investigation, said this afternoon it is in the process of transferring the lead to the FBI but stands ready to support the investigation if requested. The federal government agency had said earlier today, "If there is reason for us to believe that a criminal event has occurred, then we will take formal steps to transfer the investigation to the FBI."
